Tofte photographer Thomas Spence got the thrill of a lifetime when he happened upon one lynx standing on a road not far from Tofte. As Spence stopped more and more lynx came from the woods until five cuddled together momentarily, just long enough for him to take several pictures. Spence, who has been shooting pictures for 25 years, was hoping to get a photo of a moose on Saturday morning, Feb. 3. Thomas said he thinks four of the lynx were kittens and one, who the younger ones would go to, was the mother. A female lynx can have as many as six kittens and the young will stay with mamma up to one year. They are also known to hunt together and travel together this time of the year. Over the years Thomas has only seen an occasional lynx, and they were usually on the move. The next day he went back to where he had first spotted these beautiful cats and maybe two miles up the road spotted some tracks, but no lynx.
