Staff photos/Laurie Johnson The young Cook County High School boys’ tennis team won its first match of the season when they defeated Mora 4-3 in the first round of the Section 7A tournament on May 15.

Lars Scannell, Pete Summers, Jerod Spry and Lucas Phillips all won their singles matches to secure the victory over Mora.

The Vikings lost their next match to Virginia, currently ranked 4th in the state, 1-6.

“Lars stayed undefeated for the season by picking up our lone win at No.1 singles,” said Head Coach Mark Summers.

Both Scannell and Summers advanced to the individual sections tournament held May 20 and 21 at Longview Tennis Club in Duluth.

“Lars is the defending section 7A champion and is currently ranked 7th in the state in Class A,” said Summers.

The top two finishers from this tournament advance to the state tournament in early June.

If Scannell, a junior, and Pete Summers, a sophomore, both play well, they could meet in the championship game at sections and both advance to the state meet. Not bad for kids who have largely been restricted to practicing inside in the gym because of the cold, snowy spring weather.

Scannell wins individual title Sections

Lars Scannell won his second Section 7A tournament in a row and will be representing CCHS at the state tennis tournament, which will be held at Blake High School from June 3-6.

Scannell defeated Jack Dodd of Marshall 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match.

Pete Summers came in 4th place at the section tournament, ending a great season for the Viking sophomore.

Lucas Phillips gets set to hit a forehand winner on this play in his singles match in a game against Marshall played on the Vikings' home tennis courts.
